I've been drooling over Boston Whalers lately - well, ever since I first launched my boat in South Freeport at Strout's Point, where they had a Whaler tender - probably the 9 foot model that, apparently, isn't made anymore (according to the website anyway).

That was 2007 so this love for Whalers isn't exactly new, but now that I've finally sold my boat (phew) I have been trolling craigslist. What can I say? I'm glutton for punishment.

So I saw a few older ones and they are beauties, low and sleek in the water, but I'm fooling myself. City folk like me don't have room to store a boat/trailer. It's one of the sacrifices of living downtown.

Nevertheless, "downtown" is right on the ocean, so I can't help but get the itch. Over. And. Over. Again. Strange for a boy from the backwoods and I'm not able to explain it.

It just is.

It was refreshing to actually learn something in the local rag this week, even if it was through a letter-to-the-editor (they still printed it, right?). Basically, it sounds like our gov'ment has screwed the pooch on Haiti disaster relief in a way only the U.S. gov'ment could; with ineffective military bravado:

An hour away by air, we sent ships, which took days to arrive and for which there were no docking facilities to quickly offload aid. Granted control of the Port-au-Prince airport, the US military waved off flights from Doctors Without Borders (one flight with 12 tons of aid was denied landing four times) and others experienced in disaster relief, flights carrying medical supplies, doctors, and rescue teams and equipment, in favor of landing troops and evacuating Americans. Relief flights were diverted to the Dominican Republic, a full day away overland.

I wrote this post awhile ago and didn't remember to post it.. I had just been mulling over the pollution problem we have here on our little blue dot and it really enrages me that we are marching down the market capitalism road, covering our ears and singing "la la la la", believing all the while that this is a good solution.

Here is my take from the angle of view I have:

We need to drive renewable and sustainable energy research and innovation into those countries that, like China and India, are industrializing at a rapid pace. Use the technology where it will have the greatest impact. If Country A, population 1, could reduce their overall energy consumption by 1% by spending $10, but Country B, population 10, could reduce their overall energy consumption by 1% by spending $10, then it is clear where the money should be spent.^[1] Indeed, it would behoove Country A to spend its $10 on Country B, instead, since Country A and Country B happen to live on the same planet so receive the same benefit, relatively speaking. This is where past and current politicking on the topic is flawed - they are trying to apply a classic market economy to a problem that is anything but. Trade and cap? That is not affecting the supply of emissions, it's just moving it around. This is a Global issue that impacts everybody.^[2] We need to be thinking about this like the world's most humongous single payer system.

China cranks out two new power plants every week. If, ultimately, it is cheaper to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in China, then we need to be spending the money there. None of this per-capita discussion.

[1] In fact, this is similar to the healthcare debate, in that some people out there (backwards and confused, to be sure) insist that they don't want a single payer government run health-care system even if you tell them that it would be less expensive for them; their response: "I ain't paying for other people's shit!".

[2] Admittedly, pollution emitted closer to you will probably have a greater impact on you, especially if you're down-wind. There is a definite trade-off between spending $1 to prevent 1 ton of pollution in China versus paying $1 to prevent 1 ton of pollution in your backyard, and I accept that. However, in the grand scheme, we really want to working towards reducing pollution overall. Don't squibble on the small stuff.

Transparency International has a great interactive map of perceived political corruption based on their annual Corruption Perceptions Index.

Unsurprisingly, the Scandinavian countries score at the top, along with Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Canada, Australia. NZ appears to be the least corrupt of all.

Also unsurprising is the clump of intense corruption you see in the Iraq-Iran-Afghan corridor and middle-Africa.

Of note, for all you feminists out there arguing about how hard it is to 'run a household' and how it is 'a job, too' - according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, The average man spends 4 hrs 7 min a day working, 1 hr 19 min doing household chores, and 18 min involved in family care. For the gals, the numbers are 2:46, 2:11, and 0:35. All told that is 5:44 for the men and 5:32 for the women. Then again, us men watch half an hour more of TV..

The saddest part of the numbers, though, is that the average person only spends 43 minutes socializing and 16 minutes relaxing and thinking per day.

EROI, or Energy return on investment, as measured by the amount of energy attained over the amount of energy consumed in the attainment, is going down. In other words it is taking more and more energy (oil) to extract and refine energy (oil) from the earth.

In the 1930's the ratio was roughly 100:1. It took a barrel of oil worth of energy to extract 100 barrels of oil. In the 1970's that ratio was down to 30:1 and by the turn of the century it was all the way down to 11:1.

Anyone who doesn't believe that these numbers indicate an increasing concern for us (and in the very near-term, to boot) is fooling themselves and doing no favour to the rest of us.

We're making progress on the boat, slowly but surely. The rain on Sunday swept in and graciously gave us a day off, but so far so good.

We have two or three coats on the mizzen (above)

Two coats on the new waterline (please note that the paint was cheap at a store-closing sale, I did not choose it!)

And I think we have 4 or 5 coats on the main mast, booms, and spreaders.

Nevermind all the brightwork we've done on the top sides.. Now we just need to get the bottom of the hull painted!

WTF? The house and senate micromanaging credit card companies' fine print? "You've been naughty, and now we want you to lower your rates after 6 months for good customers, and all your rules must be in 12 point font?!?!"

I am dumbfounded. Don't get me wrong, these are not bad rules. But why is the government making them?

"A Clockwork Orange" (the film) had this to say to me: governments will perpetually take away rights, only to give them back later given public protest. But regardless of the direction, each swing of the pendulum serves their interests. With each pass back and forth, they become more legitimate. They are the source of power; regulations are imposed or relaxed, but it's always their decision in the end.

I'm trying to reconcile this with the take home message of "The Corporation," which many of you may know from the great documentary. It is also a book, which I recently perused. Herein, the message is, "the government is the only body capable of protecting of individuals from the excesses of the corporations around us." The book even suggests, via a Chomsky quote, that anti-government propaganda gets generated by corporations to serve their anti-regulatory interests. So maybe this is government's domain, and I'm just balking at the novelty.

In any case, this is very interesting shit that's going on. It seems to me like watching giants slam about in a rocky ravine. You don't know if they're play fighting, accidentally crushing the poor fuckers at the very bottom, dislodging rocks that catch a few at all levels. Or if they're doing an intricate dance, which is just a little too wild and weird to interpret.
