Fun facts out of this month's Harper's Index:

  • Rise in average premiums paid to large U.S. health-insurance companies since 2002: 87%
  • Rise in profits of the top ten insurance companies: 428%
  • Chances that an American bankrupted by medical bills has health insurance: 7 in 10

Go Team USA!

Among the more interesting interactive infographics I have seen from the New York Times (who said print media was dead? Whoops.. I guess you can't create an interactive infographic with newspaper, huh?):

How Different Groups Spend Their Day.. seriously, this is very very interesting.

Of note, for all you feminists out there arguing about how hard it is to 'run a household' and how it is 'a job, too' - according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, The average man spends 4 hrs 7 min a day working, 1 hr 19 min doing household chores, and 18 min involved in family care. For the gals, the numbers are 2:46, 2:11, and 0:35. All told that is 5:44 for the men and 5:32 for the women. Then again, us men watch half an hour more of TV..

The saddest part of the numbers, though, is that the average person only spends 43 minutes socializing and 16 minutes relaxing and thinking per day.

Nicely trimmed sails make for a self-steering boat. Hands free cruising is an order of magnitude better than having to fight the wheel.
